Distinguished and Famous people from East Torrens

🌾 John Baker

Pastoralist and politician John Baker built Morialta in 1847 on the hills near Norton Summit. His activities extended from extensive pastoral interests to agriculture, horse breeding and colonial politics. Locally, he supported a church, school and mechanics’ institute, linking a substantial private estate with public institutions. He also took an interest in agricultural technology, including the introduction of a steam plough. Morialta placed this public figure within a particular hills community, alongside his much more extensive business interests.
